In general, it is a good rule of thumb to start on the Maintenance Food Plan if you are pregnant. In certain circumstances, depending on how much weight you have to lose, your OB-GYN may approve of you losing weight during the first trimester of your pregnancy. Consultation with your doctor is vital to determining whether the Weight-Loss Food Plan is adequate or whether you need to begin with the Maintenance Food Plan. Please share the plans with your doctor.
Once in the second and final trimester, you should be on the standard Maintenance Food Plan. You may even need to add more food from certain categories to ensure your rate of weight gain is meeting your body’s needs, along with the needs of your unborn infant. The vast majority of women carrying a single baby can continue through an entire pregnancy eating three meals a day. Certain circumstances may warrant eating more frequent meals. We recommend regular consultations with your OB-GYN with regard to weight gain throughout your pregnancy along with the possibility of adding more food.
